In the past, systems could be thought of as something like a "single remote control" when compared to today's widespread smart plugs and light control devices. Back then, the hub was tied to a single channel like a television; in the new generation, a Zigbee-Thread bridge works like a "smart bridge" and can support multiple protocols simultaneously. For example, while Philips Hue’s Zigbee hub controls multiple lighting groups with group commands, old RF receivers could only turn a single device on or off.
I think this difference not only improved data flow but also enabled much greater scalability. A Wi-Fi-based Nest thermostat, updated via the cloud, integrates with other sensors in the home and even offers AI-powered energy-saving suggestions—now, a "smart home" has truly become an ecosystem. While older architectures still work for some low-power, long-range applications, when combined with modern IoT platforms, they often serve as a "bridge for backward compatibility"—so, buddy, instead of ditching old systems entirely, it might make more sense to see them as a bridge.
