The main difference between HDR10 and Dolby Vision actually comes down to the technology standards. HDR10 is a free and open standard—meaning anyone can use it, and you’ll find it across a wide range of devices, from TVs to computers. It supports 10-bit color depth and brightness up to 1,000 nits, but it doesn’t use dynamic metadata that can be recalibrated on the fly. So the image stays consistent as it plays, regardless of changing lighting conditions.
Dolby Vision, on the other hand, has a system that adjusts dynamically. With 12-bit color depth and support for up to 10,000 nits, it offers a much wider dynamic range. Content shot specifically for films is optimized scene by scene. The file size is significantly larger, too—for example, a 4K movie might be 20 GB in HDR10 but up to 40 GB in Dolby Vision. If your setup is ready for it (both TV and source), you’ll notice a serious jump in color and contrast.
My preference usually depends on the system I’m using. For example, if I’m playing a game on an Xbox Series X and my TV supports Dolby Vision, I’ll use it straight away—dark scenes look richer in detail, and highlights in bright areas pop more. But when streaming a movie on Netflix, most content only supports HDR10, so I’ll settle for that quality and avoid the larger file size.
