Which of these two protocols commonly encountered in IoT projects would you prefer to see more widely adopted in the future—MQTT for its simplicity and reliability, or CoAP for its RESTful architecture and low power consumption? Share your reasoning so we can all discuss it!

When I have to choose between MQTT and CoAP, I usually recommend MQTT. In Arduino‑based IoT projects it stands out for its simplicity and reliability. MQTT’s publish‑subscribe model makes it easy to broadcast sensor data and lets receivers listen to the topics they care about. For example, when a soil‑moisture sensor publishes its data, a local device or a cloud‑based dashboard that needs that data can simply subscribe to it. Also, because MQTT runs over TCP, the risk of data loss is low, which gives me more reliable results in projects.
That said, CoAP has advantages on narrow‑band (LPWAN) and low‑power devices. While prototyping a LoRaWAN application I saw that CoAP’s support for RESTful APIs and its UDP‑based nature provide a lighter communication layer. In applications where battery life is critical, CoAP can be a better choice. Still, considering that MQTT has a larger ecosystem and richer tooling (MQTT brokers, analytics tools), I think MQTT is the more promising protocol for the overall IoT ecosystem.
