I'm curious, what are the key differences between Z-Wave and Zigbee? In which scenarios would it make sense to choose one over the other? Which one offers better value for money in terms of price-performance?

Well, the basic differences between Z-Wave and Zigbee are already explained in many places, but I'll start with a slightly different question: If you wanted to add third-party devices to your network, which one would you choose? Due to Z-Wave's certification process, its ecosystem is strictly controlled by the Z-Wave Alliance, meaning adding a new device can take a long time. Zigbee, on the other hand, is an open standard, so almost anyone can produce a device to add to it—even Chinese knockoffs. In that case, if you want to quickly expand your ecosystem, Zigbee would be much more flexible, but of course, that comes at the cost of reliability and standardization. Then there's this: Z-Wave's mesh network has a device-to-device distance limit of around 40 meters, but in real-world conditions, this distance can be much shorter. Zigbee, meanwhile, operates with a range of about 10-20 meters, so if your home is large and has thick walls, getting proper coverage without using any relays can be tough. So, how close do you plan to place devices to each other in your setup?

Z-Wave's biggest advantage is that it's standardized. Every device works together seamlessly, making it easy to integrate into the ecosystem and only requiring a single hub for the network. With Zigbee, the standards are a bit more flexible, and sometimes devices don't work properly even with software updates. For example, I was pretty annoyed when I couldn't get my Philips Hue bulbs to work with Xiaomi sensors in the same system. In terms of price-performance, Zigbee tends to be cheaper, especially with budget Chinese brands. But if you're looking at home automation long-term, I'd recommend Z-Wave for its reliability and future-proof protocols. At my place, I use both: an Aeotec hub for Z-Wave and a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB dongle for Zigbee to handle Modmote’s sensors.

Z-Wave and Zigbee both solve the same problem—low-power, mesh-networked home automation—but they take totally different approaches under the hood. Z-Wave runs on a proprietary radio stack in the sub-GHz band (908 MHz in the US), which means fewer interference headaches from Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Zigbee, on the other hand, is open-source and typically hops in the crowded 2.4 GHz band, so you’ll see more dropouts if you’ve got a crowded apartment with dozens of access points. Z-Wave’s narrow band gives it better wall penetration, so if you’re automating a three-story Victorian with thick plaster, Z-Wave motion sensors in the attic actually reach the hub while many Zigbees silently give up. Performance-wise, both use mesh routing, but Z-Wave’s network is more centralized: every hop needs explicit routing tables held by the controller, so adding a new device doesn’t bloat the firmware like it can in Zigbee networks running on microcontrollers with 128 kB RAM. That means Z-Wave hubs rarely run out of memory even with 200+ nodes, whereas a cheap Zigbee hub (looking at you, Tradfri) starts dropping sensors once you exceed ~60 devices. On price: a Zigbee plug can cost $8 while the Z-Wave equivalent is $25, but you’ll also need a $120+ Sonoff Zigbee dongle—no cheap chips from Silicon Labs like you get in Z-Wave devices—so the gap narrows when you scale up. Unless you’re doing pro-level installs where proprietary certification matters (insurance documents, UL listings), Zigbee’s open ecosystem wins on sheer variety; if you value reliability, predictable duty cycles, and don’t mind paying a premium, Z-Wave still feels like the “Swiss watch” of home automation.
