How do you synchronize with prototyping tools?

One of the biggest synchronization problems with prototyping tools is the lack of a “common language” between designers and developers. Screens built in Figma, Adobe XD, or similar tools aren’t read by everyone as “real code.” The key here is to stay tightly aligned with the design system. For example, the color codes, font weights, and component hierarchy defined in the style guide should be transferable directly from the prototype to the codebase. In Figma I use Figma‑to‑React (or Figma‑to‑Android) plugins for this—but you have to remember that their output often needs manual tweaks. Critical mistakes surface here: a developer might think the designer made a “fancy button” while they’re actually using a systematic, templated component.
Another challenge is dynamic content and state management. A screen that looks static in the prototype can suddenly “come to life” during development when API integration or user input is added, breaking the flow the design anticipated. That’s why “design engineers” get involved in the development process—cross‑functional folks who understand UI/UX and can code. For instance, a technique we use in my teams is to create API response mockups in parallel with the design system during the first sprint. This way developers only have to think about how to render that data on the frontend, i.e., they’re not busy filling in the “gap.”
But my most critical tip is to set up a continuous feedback loop. Every change made in Figma should be instantly posted to a Slack channel by a bot, giving developers a space to push back with “How are you implementing this component?” Because something that looks like “just an animation” in the prototype could actually be a change that affects the core of the system. In the end, the key to solid synchronization is transparency and constant communication.
