I'm curious, how much different do smart thermostats work compared to traditional models? Is it true that they sync with heating/cooling systems and automatically adjust settings by learning user habits? Do they actually make a significant difference in monthly bills? What are the general impressions from users?

My dude, I also have a Nest Learning Thermostat at home, and honestly, before I got that thing, my bills were always sky-high, bro. At first, I was like, "Yeah, yeah, it's just hype," but after using it for weeks, I *felt* the difference. Like, it automatically lowers the temperature at night, so when I wake up, the house is already at the perfect temp. And when I'm not home, it switches to "Away" mode, which seriously takes a load off the heater. It also drops the heat 10 minutes after I leave and sets off an alarm if a window opens. So what if the automation rate can never be calculated with 100% accuracy? I worked on optimizing the algorithm for a home automation system in my first startup, let me tell you. Smart thermostats seem to learn user habits, or at least that's what the ads say, but in reality, what they call "learning" is often just curve fitting. For example, if someone in the house always sets it to 19 degrees, the thermostat records that as a "habit," but it's not the heating system calculating those 19 degrees—it's sensors picking up data that was manually entered by humans. So really, it's just creating an average heating schedule based on the season, something that can also be done with traditional programmable thermostats. Though, when I tried a thermostat project in my second startup, we realized the biggest source of savings was lowering the heat or cooling when people weren’t home. Smart thermostats do this by tracking your phone, automatically adjusting the temperature when it detects you’ve left. But you could achieve a similar savings rate with a traditional thermostat by doing it manually or programming a weekly schedule. You’d even get more precise control by doing it yourself. So it’s unfair to say you can’t replicate what smart thermostats market as "learning," but here’s the thing: if your goal is for your heating/cooling system to sync up and work optimally with your home, then smart thermostats *do* offer real advantages. For example, in a house I lived in, my Nest thermostat optimized the inverter technology of the heat pump by fine-tuning the RPM, and as a result, my bills dropped by 15-20%.

Tried it, bro, it really works. When I get home, it heats up on its own and shuts off, and in the mornings it adjusts to the optimal temperature. Since November, I've seen a 15-20% drop in my bills.
