While pure electric drives are indispensable in the long term, the current charging infrastructure and battery prices for mid-range models still require significant investment—comparable to the high costs of 5G networks that only become widely available over time. A hybrid approach allows for securing daily range while enabling low-emission city driving, which is particularly attractive for customers with long commutes.
In the long run, however, the focus should shift more toward advancing battery technology and recycling, so that electric vehicles become both ecologically and economically competitive within the next decade. Manufacturers can benefit from economies of scale, which the smartphone industry has already achieved in mass production of lithium-ion cells. Once these effects are transferred to the automotive sector, pure electric drives will become the dominant option, while internal combustion engines will remain niche solutions for specialized use cases.
