A year ago, I switched my car for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and the experience has shown me that, for my urban-suburban routine, it’s the ideal middle ground. I live in an area where charging infrastructure is still developing: I have a charging point at home and another at work, but there aren’t enough public stations to rely solely on electricity for trips over 150 km. With the hybrid, I use electric power for my daily commutes (≈30 km), which significantly reduces gasoline consumption and emissions. And if I need to take a longer trip, the combustion engine covers the distance without worrying about running out of charge. Plus, maintenance is still reasonable: brakes wear less due to regeneration, and the electric motor adds little complexity to the system. That’s why, while 100% electric is the long-term vision, for now the hybrid gives me the flexibility I need without sacrificing efficiency or comfort.

In my case, I would opt for a plug-in hybrid vehicle. The main reason is the flexibility it offers: I can use the battery for daily urban commutes without relying on the charging infrastructure, which is still limited in my area, and at the same time I have the range of a gasoline engine for longer trips. Over the past two years, I've tried both a fully electric car and a hybrid, and I found that the hybrid allows me to avoid range anxiety while still reducing fuel consumption. Another deciding factor has been maintenance costs. Electrical systems are very reliable, but when a fault occurs (for example, in the battery thermal management) there are few repairers and expensive parts. Hybrids share traditional mechanical components, making it easier to find workshops and reasonably priced parts. Additionally, local tax incentives still favor hybrids, reducing the final price and registration fees. Finally, I consider the evolution of the charging network. Although expansion is underway, my daily routine includes trips that don’t always coincide with fast-charging points. A hybrid allows me to charge at home, and if I need more range, I can simply start the combustion engine. Therefore, the combination of range, maintenance costs, and the current infrastructure makes the hybrid the option that best suits my needs.

The best option for a new car is a plug-in hybrid model. It combines the range of a gasoline engine for long trips without worrying about a lack of charging points, while also allowing the use of electric power in the city, where consumption is lower and CO₂ emissions are practically zero. Maintenance costs remain reasonable because the electric motor reduces wear on the combustion engine, and charging at home overnight is as simple as plugging in a cable—no need to rely solely on still-limited public infrastructure. In comparison, a fully electric car would be ideal if the charging network were as dense as gas stations and if the range were sufficient for my frequent trips outside the city. Meanwhile, a pure gasoline engine may be cheaper to purchase, but its fuel consumption and emissions make it less appealing compared to the flexibility offered by a hybrid. Thus, the hybrid positions itself as an intermediate solution that takes the best of both worlds while the electric infrastructure continues to grow.
