In one of my projects transitioning to IPv6, I had a major headache due to legacy systems' reliance on IPv4. For example, after upgrading a network device to IPv6, local applications kept communicating over IPv4, causing communication failures. Debugging took forever—everyone says "IPv6 is the future," but real-world applications still heavily depend on IPv4.
Of course, IPv6 has clear advantages: a much larger address space, automatic configuration (SLAAC), and built-in security (IPsec is mandatory). Especially for IoT devices, IPv6 is a must. But IPv4’s simplicity and ubiquity are still incredibly strong. Projects like IPv10 sound exciting in theory, but the standardization process is long and risky. For now, my preference is a slow, planned transition to IPv6 while continuing to support IPv4. Keeping stability while waiting for next-gen protocols just makes sense.
I compare IPv4 to the old Type-C cable at home—it served all of us well, but now it feels "insufficient" for newer devices. IPv6, on the other hand, is moving toward standardization like USB-C, supporting more devices and being future-ready. IPv10, though still in the prototype stage, could potentially trigger a completely different ecosystem once it emerges as a fully new "standard." For now, I’d still go with IPv6.
