Should quantum error correction be baked into hardware or handled in software?

There's been a lot of debate lately about where quantum error correction (QEC) belongs in the stack. The hardware purists argue that physical qubits need to be inherently more stable, pushing for better materials or fabrication techniques. On the other hand, software advocates claim that logical qubits will always rely on coding schemes like surface codes, making it a compiler/backend problem. Where do you stand? Is this a false dichotomy, or does one approach genuinely have more merit than the other?

Wait, so if error correction is handled in software, doesn't that add a huge overhead to the already limited qubit lifetimes?
