On my first track day, I quickly realized that the "brake bias" was the first knob to adjust. On my 2-liter car, I started with the balance at 55% front, then tested each lap by braking at around 70% pedal pressure. As soon as I felt the nose of the car dive too much, I adjusted the bias back by 2-3%. The result? A more stable braking line and less understeer at the entry. I also checked pad temperatures with an infrared thermometer; once they exceeded 250°C, the surface became slippery, so I reduced pedal pressure and added short pauses to let the brakes cool. As for shifting, engine speed drop happens mostly when revving past 6000 rpm without releasing the clutch. My proven technique is "heel-and-toe": as I shift into 3rd gear, I lightly release the clutch, blip the throttle, and immediately go into 4th. This keeps engine RPMs steady and prevents the over-release that causes wheelspin. In wet conditions, braking distance increases by 15-20%; I compensate by braking earlier and staying within 80-85% of the tire’s friction zone. For tires, I aim for a window of 90-110°C—below that, the rubber is too stiff and rotational speeds are limited; above that, the rubber degrades quickly and grip loss occurs. A quick 5-10 minute warm-up lap with progressive braking helps reach that target temperature before attacking faster lines. Bottom line: adjust bias based on understeer feel, use heel-and-toe to keep RPMs steady, monitor pad and tire temps, and brake earlier in the wet.
