Rebounds are a crucial concept in basketball, but sometimes I wonder exactly what they do. I guess I'm trying to understand how defensive and offensive rebounds affect a team's scoring advantage. If I were to dig deeper, apart from giving the player who secures the rebound an advantage, in what other situations is securing a rebound more critical? Are there tactical techniques for rebounding?

I was watching a derby live last month, the score was 83‑82 in our favor, and in the final seconds we grabbed the rebound off the opponent’s shot and went on the fast break. We completely messed up the other team’s defense and beat them by two points. Seriously, that rebound saved the game, and it gave me the perfect answer to the question that’s been bugging me: “How important is grabbing a rebound?” One of the most critical things when it comes to rebound tactics is predicting where the ball is most likely to land. For example, when I’m playing forward and I’m on defense, I always zero in on the offensive rebound. It becomes a lot easier to get the ball when you target the spots where our scorers are lacking. In our drills we put a huge emphasis on the “box‑out” technique—when you seal off your opponent, your chance of getting the rebound jumps by 80‑90 %. Especially on offensive boards, this move is a must‑have if you want to capitalize on second‑chance points.
