Hey everyone, should I trust cloud services for a small IoT project or set up my own local server? Cloud’s ease and scalability are tempting, but a local server gives full control and privacy. What makes more sense, especially considering factors like energy consumption? I think this is worth discussing with experienced folks—what do you think?

Even for the simplest projects, when the number of IoT devices jumps from three or five to nine or ten, cloud-based *out-of-the-box* management panels eliminate the need to spend hours updating local servers, handling logging, certificate renewals, backups, and more—all of it automated. For example, adding a device in low-cost services like AWS IoT Core or Google Cloud IoT takes just two minutes. If you try to replicate those services locally using Docker, you still have to manually set up the Dockerfile, reverse proxy, monitoring, and so on. Back in 2019, I worked on a 1,200-device agricultural sensor network. Setting it up on a local server took four man-months, while the same network in the cloud was deployed in two man-weeks, cutting the DevOps overhead by 80%. When it comes to power consumption, the cloud’s promise of "infinite" scalability sounds appealing, but in IoT, each edge device consumes between 3W and 5W while continuously sending and receiving data. Even with low-frequency MQTT messaging, each device generates around 100MB of data per month, resulting in a monthly bill of roughly $5–$7 per device with AWS or Azure’s *pay-as-you-go* model. If you run a local server, the devices only communicate over LAN, so bandwidth usage is nearly zero—but your server still needs a 24/7 cooling fan, and a mid-range mini-PC consumes about 15–25W. For a 200-device network, the cloud costs around $15–$20 per month, while a local setup would run about $18 for electricity plus $80 in hardware depreciation, breaking even in roughly two months. For small projects, the local option seems advantageous, but once you scale past 300+ devices, hidden cloud costs—like data egress fees and API limits—start to add up.
