What are the security differences between VPNs? Is OpenVPN or WireGuard more secure, or should we try newer protocols? What should we look out for in terms of logging policies and leak protection? What do we need to know theoretically before putting this into practice?

To understand the security differences between VPNs, you first need to look at the encryption standards of the protocols. OpenVPN has long been considered the standard, with continuous audits ensuring its reliability. WireGuard, on the other hand, is newer and stands out for its performance due to its modular structure, but it hasn’t been thoroughly tested for long-term security yet. In my experience, OpenVPN holds up much better in terms of compatibility between devices, especially in scenarios like corporate networks. When it comes to logging policies, free VPNs are usually the most dangerous, as many sell user data. In my tests, I found Mullvad and ProtonVPN’s logging policies to be quite reliable—their open-source nature and third-party audits add to their credibility. I also pay close attention to browser settings to prevent WebRTC and DNS leaks, as VPN traffic can sometimes slip out unintentionally.
