Live performances always make me obsess over microphone choices, especially when it comes to capturing vocals and instruments with the right vocal tone. When deciding between dynamic and condenser mics for recording, what factors do you prioritize? Is it clarity under stage noise, or a detailed frequency range? I’d love to hear your experiences—when do you reach for one over the other?

I’m usually on the side of dynamic mics on stage, bro. First off, their resistance to stage noise is the biggest advantage. I always use the Shure SM7B; the sound is so clean that the lows and highs come through together and never get messed up. Condensers generally give a more detailed frequency range—they’re as sensitive as a pool table, but outside a studio they can get messy. A lot of people go for condensers on vocal recordings; I think that’s just hype. If I record a demo with a Neumann U87 it would sound like a wedding, but live it even picks up the guitar amp in the back, so I stick with dynamics. With instruments it’s different; I usually use a dynamic for the kick drum and a condenser for the snare. Bottom line: if you want clarity on stage, go dynamic; if you want detail in the studio, go condenser, in my opinion.

If you want clear sound despite stage noise, dynamic mics are perfect— the bass stays lively, in my opinion. Condensers capture detail too, but if the room is a noise bomb, those details can get muddy.
