Hey guys, I'm gonna share an experience I had last year; I live in an apartment building and we set up a charging station on the lower floor of our building. At first, there were a lot of bureaucratic hurdles with the management and the municipality, but in the end, we integrated renewable energy (solar panels on the roof) into the building's shared energy line. As a result, everyone could charge their electric cars at the same spot, creating a "mini hub" instead of scattered stations on the streets, and the building management took responsibility for maintenance. This model not only reduced costs but also made energy consumption more transparent.
On a city scale, I think our strategy should be two-tiered: in densely populated and high-workload areas, we should set up parking and apartment-based micro-hubs, and in less dense areas, we should create large charging hubs connected to public transportation stations. If these hubs are located next to bike lanes and public transportation stops, the "last-mile" problem is also solved. Additionally, we can use land like unlicensed farms not just for energy production but also as charging parks at the same time; but for this, local governments and farmers need to make a joint agreement first.
Regarding pricing, instead of a fixed rate per kWh, dynamic pricing based on demand would encourage citizens to plan their charging times smartly. Maintenance responsibility requires public-private partnerships; if the municipality handles the basic infrastructure and the private sector takes care of hardware and maintenance services, long-term sustainability is ensured. In summary, spreading the charging infrastructure both inside residential buildings and in regional hubs, integrating it with renewable energy, and keeping pricing and maintenance policies transparent will contribute the most to a sustainable city vision.
When distributing electric vehicle charging stations, it's crucial to first map out the density; we used smart sensor data in our municipality to identify the most frequently used streets and parking lots. At the street level, we're installing small 22 kW fast chargers, especially in parking areas near apartment entrances, so drivers can charge even while leaving their homes. In my opinion, integrating renewable energy is also a must; my team powers the charging stations with solar panels on their roofs, making them 30-40% grid-independent, which reduces costs and keeps pricing citizen-friendly. For maintenance, a partnership between the municipality and the private sector works best. Private companies handle the upkeep of the devices, while the municipality manages permits and public communication. Citizens can also track the status and pricing of charging points in real-time via a mobile app. Bro, this combo makes the charging infrastructure in the city both accessible and sustainable—I think other cities should adopt a similar approach too.
