Last year while tinkering with my IoT devices at home, I thought, "What if these get hacked?" I was dealing with an update notification from my little vacuum robot at the time. First, I simply changed all their default passwords, but then I realized even my router settings were outdated. Since I hadn’t segmented my mesh system, if someone had breached one device, they could’ve spread across the entire network.
In the end, I segmented my network with VLANs, placing my critical devices (like the camera and modem) in a separate segment. I also restricted IoT devices to only certain ports. Now I’m so relaxed I’ve forgotten those stressful days. I even set up automatic firmware updates—let’s see what else comes up.
