For those who are curious: Don't lossless audio formats (FLAC, ALAC, etc.) sacrifice sound quality when compressing? How does the file size shrink but the audio data remain the same? Also, do you need special hardware to use these formats? If anyone can explain, I'd appreciate it!

Lossless formats work on a simple principle: they store the audio data as-is but eliminate unnecessary repetitions. For example, FLAC or ALAC compresses the continuously repeating data in sound waves (similar to writing "3a" instead of "aaa" in a text file), reducing the file size without altering the information it contains. This means the audio quality isn’t degraded—only the file size is optimized. From my experience, you don’t need special hardware to use these formats. All you need is a compatible player or device. If you’re listening to audio on your phone, using an app that supports FLAC files (like VLC, Neutron, or Boom 3D) is enough. If you’re connecting to a sound system, most modern DACs (sound cards) can play them without issues. Don’t overthink it—even hobbyists can use these formats with ease.

Thanks for the explanation, buddy. The term "lossless" already refers to a compression method that doesn’t discard any audio data—it just removes unnecessary bits while keeping the original sound intact. Formats like FLAC use mathematical algorithms to shrink the file size without degrading the audio quality. As for hardware, a regular player should do the trick; no special gear is usually needed.
