Hello, I want to monitor network traffic at my workplace. Previously, we were content with simple logging, but now we want to set up a more advanced system. I have a small team and the budget isn't huge, but we at least need a basic monitoring system. What methods do you guys use? Do you prefer passive or active monitoring, or is a hybrid approach more logical? I'm also interested in open-source or low-cost solutions. What are your recommendations?

When setting up a network monitor, I usually start with a passive approach to avoid excessive resource consumption. For example, I’d first install a simple SNMP-based tool—PRTG or Zabbix are great choices because they’re free and can easily collect a significant amount of data. You can set it up on a small Linux server, let it monitor the network, and track traffic, bandwidth, and basic metrics. My old team started exactly like this, and even a simple SNMP + Grafana combo worked for months. But if your budget allows, I’d recommend a hybrid setup. While passive monitoring collects the baseline data, you can actively check critical devices (like routers or switches) with ping and port tests. For instance, I used simple scripts on UFW to trigger email alerts the moment downtime occurred. With a hybrid approach, you get continuous data collection *and* real-time alerts. Even on tight budgets, it’s worth trying—there’s no harm in experimenting.
