Hey guys, what's the deal with turbo pumps? What exactly are they? Are they superchargers or turbos, and what's the difference? Are they really necessary for engine performance or is it just hype? What advantage do they give when you're bombing down the track?

A turbo pump isn't what people think—it's not a supercharger or turbocharger. There's a big difference. A turbo pump is actually part of the turbo system, one of those spinning blades inside the turbocharger. The "pump" part is a bit misleading because it doesn't pump air—it generates pressurized air. So the thing that boosts engine performance is the whole turbo system, not just that one part. Honestly, the pump itself doesn’t directly affect performance; it’s the turbocharger running because of the pump that does. The main difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger is that a supercharger gets power directly from the engine—you know, the type connected by a belt. A turbocharger, on the other hand, spins using exhaust gases, meaning it uses waste energy to improve efficiency. Since a turbo pump is part of the turbocharger, it’s more efficient compared to a supercharger. When it comes to performance on the track, a turbo system lets the engine burn more air and fuel, which increases horsepower. In short, a turbo pump alone doesn’t mean much—it’s just a component of the whole turbo system. If you want to boost your engine’s performance, you should focus directly on the turbocharger system.

A turbo pump is basically a type of turbocharger in my opinion, but it works differently. Does it feed the engine directly like a supercharger, or does it run on exhaust gas?
