I'm currently working on a new track and looking for effective techniques to create deep, rumbling basslines that sound great both in the club and on small speakers. What’s your preferred sound-design approach—like layering, sub-synths, frequency modulation, or creative sidechain techniques? How do you handle dynamics and space in the mix to keep things clear? Any EQ strategies or parallel compression tips would be welcome too. What workflows have proven reliable for you?
How do you guys structure your bassline mixes for maximum impact?

I was working on a previous EDM track where I built the foundation with a sub-synth layer, then layered a slightly distorted, higher-frequency synth on top of the main bass to keep the low end thick while maintaining clarity in the highs. I used a high-pass filter to separate the midrange of the drums and bass, and applied parallel compression with sidechain ducking to the bass on the mix bus—this kept the punch without burying the details. This way, the track sounds deep on big speakers but still holds up with clarity on small ones.
