I've noticed that generative AI tools are becoming ubiquitous in music production, from instrument synthesis to automated composition. Some say it frees up creativity by eliminating technical tasks, while others fear it could lead to a homogenized sound and diminish the artist's role. Personally, I'm curious about how these algorithms influence the songwriting process and what skills remain essential. What are your thoughts on integrating AI into our synthpop projects? What advantages and limitations have you encountered in your experiments?

Generative AI for music creation is more like a "composition assistant" than another instrument: if you compare it to a drum machine or a synthesizer, the major difference lies in how the content is produced. A drum machine delivers predefined patterns; AI, on the other hand, can generate melodies or textures from a simple prompt, speeding up prototyping but not replacing artistic decision-making. Thus, the skills that remain essential are the ability to define an emotional direction, edit, and humanize the results (subtle variations, dynamics, orchestration choices). In practice, I’ve seen synthpop projects gain speed when using AI to create hooks or pads—but without a critical eye, there’s a risk of a uniform sound, especially if all participants use the same models. In short, AI is a process accelerator, comparable to an arpeggio-generation plugin, but the real added value always comes from the human curator who shapes, selects, and contextualizes the final product.
