I've heard that the problem stems from soluble rocks like limestone/gypsum beneath the Mosul Dam foundation, man. We actually encounter similar situations from time to time—last year, while working on a water treatment plant project, we dealt with ground deformation issues caused by voids forming under the dam due to constant limestone layers. For that project, we stabilized the ground by injecting high-pressure resin mixes (jet grouting) and then tracked crack expansion with continuous monitoring systems. In the end, we reduced underground leaks and boosted the ground's durability. The key here is how fast those voids from dissolving rock expand and how quickly you can compensate for it. With a massive dam like Mosul, classic methods can be risky, I think, bro. I've also heard about the soft ground case under the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy—they used additions and drainage systems there too. It seems the Mosul teams will need to work on controlling water flow with drainage systems and ground improvement injections to slow down limestone dissolution. Otherwise, they better take the "melting cheese" term seriously—it's not an exaggeration at all.
