Jumping into the VR world and getting a **Meta Quest 2** made me curious about the difference myself. The key distinction is this: VR completely shuts out your surroundings—it’s like you’re in a whole other world entirely. When you put on the headset, sensors track your head movements and instantly update the image, so you don’t lose your balance. The downside, though, is that you’re blind to the physical space around you, meaning you could suddenly walk into a table. AR, on the other hand, enhances the real world. I tried the **HoloLens 2**, for example, and it feels like you’re pressing an imaginary button on your hand. The camera scans the real environment, and sensors calculate the positions of objects, so virtual elements stay exactly where they should. The biggest advantage here is that your interaction with the real world continues uninterrupted. The downside, though, is that image processing drains the battery—unless you’re using the `Mesh experience`, long sessions mean dealing with heat and battery life issues.

An app I’d downloaded scanned the milk carton with my phone’s camera as I reached for it, instantly pulling up price comparisons—and even the expiry date—right on my screen. Here, AR wasn’t replacing the entire environment like VR does; instead, it was layering digital information over the real world. Depth-sensing TOF sensors and AI-powered image processing were working behind the scenes, but I was still standing in the supermarket aisle—just with extra data floating on my display. When you weigh up the pros and cons, VR is thrilling, but AR is far more practical for day-to-day life.
