But has anyone actually talked about the biggest risk these tools pose to us developers—especially the ones focused on coding assistance—namely "mental laziness" and the erosion of competence? As we all know, a lot of developers have started relying heavily on generative AI tools, to the point where even writing simple commands means constantly deferring to their suggestions. For example, instead of writing a function manually, a developer today might just throw out a prompt like "give me the Python code for this function," copy the result without fully understanding how it works, and move on.
What’s the long-term fallout here? Take someone hired as a junior developer for years—they might end up with fundamental knowledge gaps, only capable of tweaking AI-generated code rather than truly contributing. These tools can be great assistants, but we need to develop strategies to use them without undermining our skills. Instead of just leaning into the convenience AI offers, we have to critically evaluate its outputs and continuously refresh our own expertise to integrate them properly. Otherwise, in the mid-term, will only "AI prompt monkeys" survive in the industry—or will the developers who can actually solve problems and understand systems come out on top?
