In the early autumn when the temperature dropped to -15°C, I had to quickly check the suspension of my sedan before a long road trip. It’s also important to check the vertical struts: a sharp tap on the edge of the spring near the body should produce a "clunk," and the absence of vibrations means everything is in good condition. The key is to have a compressed air canister with dry air ready to blow moisture out of the seals, avoiding unnecessary disassembly until these quick checks are done. These methods helped me identify only one slightly worn bushing in the front stabilizer bar, which was replaced without dismantling the entire suspension, and the trip went smoothly without any extra rattles in the cold weather. Tip: always keep measuring rods and a portable microphone handy—they save hours of work and let you pinpoint exactly where repairs are needed.

For a cold suspension check, the easiest way is to skip the full disassembly and use a combination of the "pull-test" and an acoustic inspection. First, lift the car onto small stands (about 5–7 cm) and, while holding the wheels, gently "rock" them vertically and horizontally. At temperatures between –10…–20°C, the elastic elements (rubber bushings, bumpers) become stiffer, and any play is immediately felt as a sharp "poking" motion with a distinct click. For more precise measurement, place a digital indicator (e.g., 0.01 mm) at the center of the stabilizer rod and record the deviation when tilting by ±10°. Compared to the usual "warm" method (where parts are already heated and play may be "masked"), the cold method has the advantage of early detection of wear in rubber and sealing elements, which often "hide" the problem in warm conditions. Key parameters: free play of the shaft/cable (no more than 2–3 mm), noise during a light tap (metallic grinding = worn bearings), and the response of rubber dampers (minimum response ≈ 5 ms). Pitfalls: excessive jerking can damage fragile struts, and measurements on slippery surfaces introduce errors, so use rubber mats under the stands. Plan the check right after diagnosing the starter: within the first 2–3 minutes of engine operation, noises are at their clearest, and the body temperature hasn’t risen yet, giving the most reliable results.
