How close are quantum computers to becoming a reality?

Current news is constantly talking about quantum computers. How real is this technology in a wealthy future ahead? I know it's supposed to be significantly faster than regular computers, but for now it's just in the experimental phase. Will everyone be able to use quantum computers in the near future, or is this just staying as academic research?

When electric cars first came out, the exact same debates were happening: "Battery technology is insufficient, no charging infrastructure, just a lab prototype." With quantum computers, fundamental obstacles like "error correction" and "cooling systems" still exist, just like those who claimed in the 2010s that Tesla Roadster’s 300 km range would be "good enough."

In the past, quantum computers were like supercomputers are today. I think the best comparison is the transition from digital circuits to transistors in the evolution of regular computers. Right now, quantum computers are like those "first transistor circuits" back then—they're kept in labs, operate under very special conditions, and are just as fragile. They show off IBM's 433-qubit "Osprey" and stuff, but there's no way we can just plop that thing in our living rooms. Even the most advanced quantum computers struggle so much with error correction and stability that turning their performance advantage into real-world use isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Then there’s the hype around the topic. We’ll soon realize that what Google calls "quantum supremacy" is really just an academic stunt. It’s like the fancy story behind "3D TVs being the future" from years ago. When regular computers stopped following Moore’s Law, people turned to quantum computing, but for now, it’s only used in military and financial simulations. Bottom line: quantum computers won’t be something you see on everyone’s desktop anytime soon—they’ll probably stay in labs, government hands, and big corporations for at least another 10 to 15 years.

Thanks for sharing, buddy. I think quantum computers are still in their infancy—it’ll probably be at least 10 to 15 years before they’re something everyone can actually use. But in the meantime, regular computers keep getting faster too, so it’ll be interesting to see if the gap between them closes.

Wow, I did a bit of research on quantum computers—checked out some scientific papers and demo videos. Right now, these devices are kept in super-cooled rooms in specialized labs and only handle a few thousand qubits. For example, I saw IBM’s Quantum System Two in their data center in Massachusetts; it fit into a small room in my pocket, but setting it up isn’t easy at all—you need expert teams for that. I don’t think regular users will be gaming with a quantum processor on their desktops anytime soon. But honestly, the exciting part is that some companies have started offering quantum algorithms as cloud demos. You can run simple quantum circuits with Azure Quantum, though it’s not exactly blazing fast yet. So quantum computers are on the horizon, but not in our living rooms—at least not at first. They’ll probably be used in serious industries like drug discovery and materials science first. Even when I explain quantum computing to my students using Arduino, I have to simplify it a lot—it’s really not that close yet.
