I've noticed more and more indie musicians using AI-based production software to generate arrangements, beats, or even melodies. While some argue that these tools speed up creative processes and open up new soundscapes, others see them as a threat to authenticity and the artist's personal touch. What are your thoughts on this? What advantages and disadvantages do you see in using AI in the independent music scene? Are there ethical boundaries we should consider, or is the technology simply another tool? I'm curious about your opinions and experiences! 🎧

As an indie producer, I’ve been experimenting with an AI-powered plugin for drum patterns since last year. At first, I was skeptical because I didn’t want to lose my "handwritten" beats. But the tool quickly provided me with several rhythmic ideas that I used as a starting point. By instantly trying out variations, I was able to finish way more tracks in a single session than I ever could before. The actual melody and vocal performance were always my call—the AI output was more like a suggestion I could tweak or scrap entirely based on my own taste. That said, I’ve noticed the risk of relying too much on pre-made AI ideas, which can dilute your personal style. That’s why I only use AI in the early stages for inspiration and then manually refine everything to keep it authentic. Ethically, I don’t see a problem as long as the generated samples aren’t passed off as someone else’s compositions but are clearly labeled as "AI-assisted." To me, the technology is a useful tool—as long as you stay in control and don’t lose sight of your own artistic voice.

AI-assisted production software has significantly sped up my songwriting workflow over the past year. I use a plugin that automatically suggests harmonies for a chord progression I’ve written—this not only saves time but also opens up tonal ideas I’d hardly have discovered without AI assistance. Especially in the indie scene, where budgets and studio time are tight, such tools can make the difference between an unfinished demo track and a polished release. Still, there’s a risk that relying too much on pre-made models could dilute an artist’s personal signature. In my own project, I’ve set a clear rule: the AI provides raw material—melody suggestions, drum loops, or effects—and I manually refine every element, adjust the rhythm, and add unexpected micro-variations. This way, the final result remains unmistakably my style, while I still benefit from the AI’s creative leaps. From an ethical standpoint, transparency about when and how AI components are used is key. A note in the album liner notes or streaming metadata indicating that certain parts were AI-generated prevents misleading listeners and protects authorship. As long as the technology is treated as a tool rather than a replacement for artistic decisions, I see little reason to ban it—instead, it expands the sonic vocabulary available to independent musicians.

I think AI tools expand my production possibilities because I can quickly test ideas, but I always make sure to revise the generated parts myself to keep my signature style. On my last EP, I started with an AI-generated beat and then completely reshaped the melody and mix so the final result stayed authentic. For me, the technology is just a tool as long as I don’t hand over creative responsibility to the AI.
