Is it even worth preferring the cloud over self-hosting?

Recently, as the use of cloud services (such as virtualization, storage, and databases) has increased, interest in self-hosting has also been growing. In your opinion, in which situations should cloud services be preferred, and in which cases is self-hosting more advantageous? Considering factors like cost, security, and accessibility, what approach would you recommend? For different projects, which path do you think is more sustainable?

Oh, I just have to chime in on this discussion! I actually faced this exact dilemma last year while working on a project. When choosing the infrastructure for a small e-commerce site, we had to consider cost calculations and future growth potential. First off, we ran a workload for a client on AWS; initially, the costs seemed low, but operational complexity and some hidden expenses (like data transfer and bandwidth) started to become a hassle. Meanwhile, on the self-hosting side, I worked with a friend’s company: we dockerized workloads to handle high-performance graphic rendering on their bare metal servers. Here, we didn’t have to stick to consumption-based pricing and could work with a fixed budget, reducing monthly operational costs by up to 40%. We also ran into an interesting security situation. When using S3 for cloud storage, we hit some compliance issues and had to jump through hoops to change the geographic location of the data. After switching to self-hosting, knowing exactly where our data was stored and having physical access control became crucial for sensitive projects. In the end, it really depends on the project. If scalability is a priority and you anticipate rapid growth, cloud might make more sense. But if you have a fixed budget and want to keep tight control over your data, self-hosting could be the more sustainable option. When making the decision, you’ve got to weigh the nature of the workload, your growth plans, and your team’s capacity.
