There are a lot of cloud CDN solutions on the market right now, ranging from free basic versions to expensive premium plans. The question is, what does that premium actually give you, and when is it justified? Some people are convinced that basic features are enough for most websites, while others believe that extra layers of security and optimization pay off for complex projects. What do you think—should you always go for paid plans, or is a minimal setup enough?

I once worked on an eco-tourism project where we had to upload dozens of gigabytes of video and photos from field expeditions. The client was initially on the free tier of a popular CDN—everything worked fine, but during peak seasons (especially in Southeast Asia), streams would cut out every half hour, even though the promised uptime was 99.9%. We had to urgently migrate to the premium version with DDoS protection and global traffic prioritization via PoPs in Singapore and Tokyo. Costs tripled, but content stability jumped to 99.98%, and even during IoT botnet attacks, the site never went down. For us, the premium tier paid off in the first month—but only because the project was 24/7 with a live audience across Asia. For business cards or mid-traffic blogs, the free version was usually enough. The decision depends on the client’s SLA and business needs.
