How can I improve the audio quality settings on a Discord voice server?

Voice chat always has the same issues: sharp peaks in the EQ, very low average volume levels, and background noise. Does it make sense to suppress or boost a specific frequency band? What settings on the server and voice client side help solve these problems? What are the recommended standard settings for users?

I had my biggest argument about voice quality on Discord last year while playing CTF with my teammates during an international match. I especially struggled to hear in-game commands; the voices either came through shaky or the constant clacking of keyboards in the background was overwhelming. One night, I researched just like you did: first, I messed with the server-side settings. I enabled "Amplification" and "Noise suppression" in the voice channel permissions and switched the voice profile from "Music" to "Voice." Then I activated Discord’s built-in noise suppression (Settings > Voice & Video > Noise suppression). The most critical step, though, was client-side echo calibration. With the default settings, the volume would always hover between 30-40; in "Voice settings > Advanced," I manually boosted the volume to 60-70 and slightly suppressed the most problematic frequency range (1kHz-3kHz). I also recommended a "supercardioid" mic to my teammate, and that made a huge difference for him too. Now, no one on the team says, "Captain, are you gonna waste our time again?"—it actually works!
