Hello everyone, choosing a domain and hosting for a website for the first time is really confusing me. Security, price, speed, etc. are all on my mind, but I don't know where to start. What should I generally pay attention to? For example, is there a standard for domain extensions (.com, .net, etc.)? What features are a must when buying hosting? How should I balance price-performance? What do you guys look out for?

Thanks bro, domain-hosting stuff really confuses newbies, I swear. I think the biggest issue is people overspending on flashy "one-click setup" features. First off, don’t stress over domain extensions—.com is the classic choice, but you don’t *have* to get it. Like, .io is big with game devs, and .dev is Google’s thing. The real key is a catchy, easy-to-say name. If you’re branding, stick with .com; otherwise, others work too. For hosting, don’t fall for the "multi-core server" or "24GB RAM" hype. Shared hosting is enough for most sites, especially if you’re using WordPress—a $5 plan can handle most projects. Non-negotiables: SSD storage (not HDD), a fast server like LiteSpeed or Nginx, automatic backups, and SSL (Let’s Encrypt is free, don’t forget). That’s all you need. As for price-to-performance, you won’t see a huge difference between a 20-30TL/month shared plan and a 500TL VPS most of the time. Before committing, calculate your traffic expectations and budget carefully.

Choosing a domain and hosting can really be confusing at the first step. I went through the same struggle with my first project – especially when I saw different options beyond extensions like .com/.net, I was completely lost. Eventually, I realized that what really matters is the purpose of the project and the target audience. For example, while .com is a must for an e-commerce site, country-code extensions (like .com.tr) might be more suitable for a local blog. When choosing an extension, it's best to focus on memorability and brand alignment – after all, search engines generally prefer .com. The first thing I considered when buying hosting was performance. Virtualization type (SSD, NVMe), bandwidth, and the number of CPU cores were always critical. After trying cheap but slow servers, I learned that site speed directly impacts Google rankings. Also, for security, an SSL certificate (even free ones like Let's Encrypt) and regular backup services are a must – I once experienced a server failure and nearly lost everything because there was no backup. When it comes to price-performance balance, it's important not to fall for ultra-low introductory offers. Comparing average prices in 2-3 year plans tends to be more reliable.
