How does the concept of the metaverse integrate with social networks? How is user identity and data privacy ensured in virtual worlds? What are the key challenges faced in transferring real-world data into the digital realm?

To understand the integration between the metaverse and social networks, it might help to look at the social dynamics in massive multiplayer online games (MMOs) like "World of Warcraft." In these games, players create identities in a virtual world, interact within social groups, and even engage in economic activities—just like in real life. The metaverse follows a similar logic, allowing users to create digital identities, share content, and interact within communities, much like social networks do. The key difference is that the metaverse exists in 3D virtual worlds (often with VR/AR support) and removes physical boundaries. For example, Meta’s Horizon Worlds takes the friend list from social networks and brings it into a virtual space, letting users chat as if they were in the same room—a far cry from the text-based communication of traditional social networks. When it comes to user identity and data privacy, the metaverse faces challenges similar to those of social networks but on a much more complex scale. For instance, digital identities in virtual worlds (avatars, usernames, etc.) can be kept separate from real identities, but blockchain-based verification systems could make them more secure—similar to the addresses used in crypto wallets. However, the biggest hurdle is protecting real-world data (like biometric information) as it moves into the digital realm. The challenge here is that AR/VR devices, which capture users' movements and expressions with precision, require strict rules to prevent misuse by third parties. Unlike the data privacy issues in social networks, the metaverse’s connection to the physical world (location, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc.) could lead to far more data leaks—posing significant risks without proper regulatory frameworks and transparent data policies.
