I'm curious about how Instagram sorts posts in the feed and Explore sections. What factors does the algorithm prioritize—like likes, comments, watch time, or interaction history? Also, how much do timing and content type (photo, video, Reels) impact visibility? What are your thoughts on this based on your experience?
How Does Instagram's Algorithm Work and Affect Post Visibility?

Instagram’s feed and Explore ranking are determined by each user’s “engagement prediction score.” This score considers not just likes and comments on a post, but also comment length, reply rates, watch time (especially completion rates for videos and Reels), and the history of interactions with other accounts. Post timing matters too—if a post gathers a lot of reactions within the last 24–48 hours, the algorithm marks it as “fresh” and prioritizes it.
Looking at content types, Reels are evaluated heavily on views and completion rates, much like TikTok, while photos and regular videos rely more on direct engagement like likes and saves.
Compared to other platforms, TikTok’s algorithm focuses on “watch time” and “skip rates” to gauge user scrolling speed, favoring videos that make an impact quickly. Instagram, however, also factors in deeper engagement like saves and shares, as well as relationships with existing followers. For creators aiming to build long-term audiences, a diverse posting strategy using photos and captions tends to work better.
In my own test, using the same image in both a Reel and a regular post, the Reel saw quicker short-term reach, but the regular post had higher save rates and profile visits.
