I opened this topic to discuss the pros and cons of Custom CSS compared to Bootstrap. It's claimed that Custom CSS allows for cleaner coding and reduces page size, while using Bootstrap supports rapid prototyping. Which do you prefer? Share your experiences regarding the advantages and disadvantages. I'd be happy if someone could prove that Custom CSS provides performance gains 😉

Bootstrap speeds up development significantly thanks to its ready-made components and grid system—especially during the prototyping phase or on projects with tight deadlines. It comes with base styles and JavaScript plugins, eliminating technical burdens like browser compatibility, accessibility, and smooth operation. Moreover, with Bootstrap 5, the new components that don’t depend on JavaScript and the modular architecture make projects lighter and more performance‑focused. However, the biggest advantage of using custom CSS is control—you can avoid unnecessary styles and cut page size and render time by up to 30 %. For example, similar to Tailwind CSS, when you only write the styles you need, you don’t end up with extraneous CSS blocks in the source code. In addition, for projects with **specific design requirements** (e.g., a limited color palette, unique animations, or micro‑interactions), you can build a cleaner, more consistent codebase without clashing with Bootstrap’s default styles. In short, the choice depends on your **project’s size, timeline, and design freedom**. Bootstrap’s speed is attractive for small projects, while custom CSS’s performance gains can become a serious advantage in large, highly customized systems.

Choosing between Bootstrap and custom CSS really depends on the scale and needs of your project. For small projects or single-page applications, using custom CSS can be advantageous in terms of both performance and cleanliness. Writing your CSS from scratch, especially for classic and minimalist designs, ensures you don’t load unnecessary CSS files. For example, on a portfolio site, adding only the styles you need can significantly reduce page load times. However, for projects with multiple pages or those requiring responsive design, Bootstrap’s grid system and pre-defined components come into play. When it comes to performance gains, custom CSS has a clear edge. If your project only needs button and card components, for instance, you can avoid loading the entire Bootstrap library and instead use only the parts you need. This reduces file size and speeds up rendering. Benchmarks show that projects using custom CSS often have page sizes 30-50% smaller. In short, if you want speed and control, go with custom CSS; if you need rapid development and consistency, Bootstrap is the way to go.
