Bro, I’ve noticed that most people setting up home automation systems these days are leaning toward a hub-based architecture, but honestly, a distributed setup actually offers way more sustainability benefits. With a single hub (like a Zigbee Coordinator or Home Assistant) managing everything, the setup is simple, but if that hub goes down, the whole system crashes and scaling becomes a pain. Plus, once the hub’s bandwidth and processing power max out, adding new protocols gets tricky. In a distributed setup, each device handles its own protocol (Z-Wave, Thread, Matter, etc.), so the network naturally forms a mesh. That means even if one device fails, communication keeps flowing through other paths. This setup is also more efficient in terms of energy consumption and response time, especially when using low-energy, low-latency protocols instead of 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Adopting a standardized protocol like Matter ensures long-term compatibility and updates across different brands’ devices, keeping everything in one ecosystem. Sustainability isn’t just about hardware—it’s also about how you manage and update the system. A central hub is more vulnerable to constant firmware updates and vendor lock-in risks, while a distributed system lets each node update independently. Even if one device’s firmware fails, the whole network keeps running, reducing maintenance costs and extending the system’s lifespan. I get that starting with a hub for a quick trial makes sense, but for a truly long-term smart home, a distributed, protocol-based architecture is the way to go. It offers flexibility and sustainability, especially with Matter gaining traction in the ecosystem. For future integrations and expansion plans, going distributed is the smarter choice.

I think distributed architecture is more flexible and sustainable; if a single hub goes down, the whole house goes dark, but in a distributed system, losing one device only affects that device. Bro, I'm still trying to set up something with a hub, feeling like a noob 😂.

In my opinion, a centralized hub remains the simplest solution to implement and maintain, especially if you're just starting out with automation. I initially installed a Zig‑Bee / Z‑Wave hub, and all my bulbs, plugs, and sensors are connected to it; configuration is done from a single app, scenarios are created in a few clicks, and firmware updates are uniform. On the other hand, when the number of devices explodes or you want to integrate multiple protocols (Matter, Thread, BLE…) without relying on a single point of failure, a distributed model becomes more resilient: each device manages its own state and communicates directly with cloud services or via a mesh network. So, if you have a small to medium-sized device park and prioritize ease of management, go for the central hub; if you're aiming for a highly connected home with multiple standards and built-in redundancy, opt for a distributed architecture, possibly combined with a lightweight hub for more complex scenarios.
