Did self-hosting really become obsolete? With cloud services being so cheap and reliable, why bother with it anymore? Is managing your own server now just a hobbyist thing? From my experience, costs have gone up and maintenance has become harder—what do you think? For low-budget projects, is self-hosting still a smart choice, or is it just nostalgia now?

When it comes to comparing cloud services, self-hosting still has its advantages, but it really depends on your budget and use case. For example, I did a cost comparison between getting a VPS for 3.99€/month on Hetzner and setting up a small WordPress site from scratch versus using ready-made services like Zoho or WordPress.com: the total cost of self-hosting (server + domain) catches up to cloud services within 2-3 years, but you get full control and don’t have to hide your data from anyone.
The maintenance part, though, can be really challenging, especially when it comes to security updates and backups. I solved this by ditching my old Raspberry Pi at home and switching to a local VPS, where I now handle automated backups. So not only did it become cheaper, but maintenance got easier too—but of course, whether it’s worth it depends on your needs. If you’re just jotting down notes, there’s no point in bothering when Notion alternatives exist. But if you care about data privacy or are developing a custom app from scratch, self-hosting still makes sense.
