Is it worth starting a Twitch stream or is it just a money pit?

Hey, let's say I want to try something new. Does streaming on Twitch stay a hobby or can it actually turn into a real source of income? It seems like a complicated topic—algorithms keep changing, finding sponsors isn’t easy, etc. Do you think it’s worth putting in the effort, or should it just be seen as a fun pastime? What are your experiences? I’m wondering who I should even try this with.

Well, even if I come on a bit strong, the truth is this: starting Twitch streaming with the mindset of "whatever, it'll work out" often ends up being a disappointment. You already mentioned it— the algorithm keeps changing, and with thousands of streamers on the platform, standing out is almost impossible. And losing money is way too easy— good hardware, monthly bandwidth, licenses, time... It all comes out of your pocket. It wasn’t like this before; amateur streamers could even earn small tax-free incomes, but now even Twitch demands serious budgets and constant content volume just to become a "partner." So the risk of losing money is really high, especially if you started as a hobby. But of course, there’s always another perspective. If you already have a passion for content creation and enjoy the fun side of it, that’s different. For example, unlike YouTube, on Twitch you don’t have to constantly produce high-quality content— just chatting while playing a game can work. But here’s the thing you shouldn’t forget: if you expect Twitch to be a source of income, you’re no longer just playing games— you’re trying to build a brand. Suddenly, you’ve got to find sponsors, manage social media accounts, develop ad strategies, and so on. Plus, ad revenue is split, so that "easy money" dream isn’t very realistic. I do know a streamer who invested and planned for long-term growth—but even he streamed almost every day for three years before reaching stable income. So yeah, no pain, no gain, and even if it’s fun, you can’t avoid the work. If you just want to have fun in your free time, then keep going without worrying about money—but if you expect income, you might end up really disappointed. Anyway, you know best— but it’s worth trying, of course!
