Hey everyone, lately I've been hearing the word "federation" a lot on social media platforms. What does it mean? What kind of system is it? For example, can a user follow someone who is registered on another server? How does this concept work exactly? I'd appreciate it if you could explain.
What is a federation? How does it work?

Hey man, I once worked on a project where I came across this federation system. There was a developer friend who needed to join the project, but he was using his own server. He needed to be included in the system, but there wasn't a central registry. So, I got curious and started researching. Eventually, I came across the ActivityPub protocol — learned that it's one of the building blocks of federation. My friend's server could communicate with another server, and users could follow each other, just like in email systems.
Once I understood the logic, it seemed pretty straightforward. Each server operates independently, but can communicate with other servers through protocols. For example, a user on Mastodon (a platform that supports federation) could see and message another user registered on their own server. Since this system is open-source, it's constantly evolving and improving. Thanks to this, I was able to build a much more flexible structure in my own project.
