Is it still worth learning Twitter API development in 2024?

I'm three months into Python and thinking about getting into web development with APIs. How much does diving into Twitter/X's API (or any social platform's API) actually add for a beginner? I understand the REST vs. streaming trade-offs, but is it good real-world practice, or just too niche? Looking for experiences or alternative API suggestions that are more beginner-friendly while still being practical.

Focusing on the Twitter API still makes a lot of sense in 2024. Last year, I took exactly this route: built a simple Twitter clone with Flask/Django and saw firsthand how powerful APIs can be. Learning the difference between REST and streaming in practice is basically a universal skill—it means you can adapt to any REST API down the line. That said, Twitter’s own API doesn’t always play nice like the docs promise (OAuth2, rate limits…). A better starting point might be something like GitHub or OpenWeatherMap—APIs that are 100% stable, free, and have crystal-clear documentation. My advice? Start small with a local project using PocketBase or Supabase, then write a bridge that sends that data to Twitter. That way, you get hands-on experience with both backend work and APIs at the same time.
