VPNs are just about privacy now, aren’t they?

I've noticed a significant shift in the VPN market lately. Back in the day, they were seen as just privacy tools, but now they're used to bypass geo-restrictions, dodge censorship, or even block ads. Plus, with AI-based traffic analysis, VPNs are getting smarter. Where do you think this shift is headed? Will VPNs remain just security tools, or evolve into multi-functional services? Let's discuss!

Last year, while video calling a friend in Thailand, I noticed that the hotel Wi-Fi, due to geoblocking, only allowed state channels on YouTube. That night, when I connected via my old OpenVPN server, we not only accessed unlimited content but also saw ads disappear instantly. That’s when I realized VPNs are no longer just "secret tunnels"—they’ve become a **tool for fairness at the network level**. Then, just last month, while remotely working for a startup in Romania, we faced access issues to certain datasets due to the EU’s protectionist data policies. By switching the VPN exit point through EU servers, we could download the files instantly. The server’s security was also reasonable—double NAT with the WireGuard protocol. In the end, we stayed within legal boundaries while bypassing the block. Looking ahead, AI-based traffic analysis will likely make such use cases even more common in the future.
