I don't get the logic behind VPNs. They say it encrypts our data and sends it through a different server, but does that really give us 100% privacy? Or is it just a little safer? What about things like Tor, aren't they better?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) aims to protect your privacy by encrypting your data end-to-end and routing your traffic through another server. Essentially, it creates a "tunnel" through your VPN provider's servers instead of sending your traffic directly, which ISPs (and governments) can monitor. For example, if you connect from the US, your traffic might route through a server in Sweden, hiding your original location. However, a critical point here is choosing a trustworthy VPN provider—since the company owning the servers can access all your traffic. That’s why no-logs (no data retention) VPNs with independent audits are the best choice. But does this guarantee 100% privacy? Unfortunately, no. VPNs protect your data until it leaves their network, but you can never be sure what the provider logs (or claims to log). Also, while VPNs are faster than Tor, they’re far less anonymous. Tor routes traffic through multiple random nodes, making it nearly impossible to trace your real IP or activity patterns—but this comes with significant performance losses and sometimes legal gray areas (e.g., accessing the darknet). VPNs are generally legal and preferred by businesses, while Tor is designed for users needing extreme privacy (journalists, activists). In short, a VPN only provides a certain level of security—if you truly want to be untraceable, Tor or a VPN + Tor combo is far more reliable.
