What should I look for when choosing a VPS?

I'm curious, when choosing a VPS, which parameters are really important? Is it performance, price, or are there other factors that stand out? For example, how do you approach RAM and CPU core ratios, storage type (SSD vs HDD), or bandwidth selection? What are the differing recommendations based on use case (web hosting, game server, development environment, etc.)?

Before even starting to look for answers when choosing a VPS, you need to clarify your use case. For example, if it's a simple WordPress site, a clean SSD VPS with 24GB RAM and an 8-core CPU will almost certainly be sufficient—memory is usually the most critical factor in such tasks because PHP and the database are constantly running in the pool. For game servers (CS:GO, Minecraft, etc.), you're trying to breathe from the CPU, and if the disk is fast enough, RAM takes a backseat. If it's a development environment (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.), you need to be sure about the disk, but also have a rich CPU so that CI/CD pipelines don't bottleneck. So, in summary: purpose of use = the key factor determining VPS size. When it comes to storage, it's time to almost say goodbye to HDDs. Even in a $5 VPS, SSD is now the standard—you can tolerate a 7500 RPM HDD from the fridge only if annual backup restores aren't too heavy. For disk-IO intensive tasks like antivirus scans, daily log recording, etc., switching to NVMe creates a massive performance gap. Before looking at 'unlimited' vs 'pay-as-you-go' bandwidth, focus on firewall and traffic shaping tied to the data center. Because packages with 100Mbps usable bandwidth always come from saturated lines, whereas if you're given 500GB storage, the disk ends up being unbelievably slow. Rule: every parameter is a complementary piece of a puzzle.
