I'm planning a new home network and trying to decide which Wi-Fi approach to go with. The options are: 1) a classic dual-band router, 2) a modern tri-band router for higher capacity, or 3) a mesh system that uses multiple nodes for better coverage. Which option do you find most reliable for multiple devices at once, and why? Share your experiences and arguments—is range, stability, or scalability most important to you?

A dual-band router (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz) is sufficient for a typical home network, but it quickly hits its limits with many simultaneous streams. Modern tri-band routers add an extra 5 GHz band that acts as a "backhaul" for internal traffic management. This prevents devices using the primary 5 GHz band from being slowed down by the 2.4 GHz band. In practice, this makes a measurable difference in latency and throughput for 6–8 simultaneous 4K streams or multiple smart home devices (typically 1 Gbps per 5 GHz band, up to 2 Gbps combined). A mesh system excels in coverage. By using multiple nodes that communicate over a dedicated 5 GHz backhaul band, the signal can be extended across spaces of 30 m² or more without significant signal loss. Most current mesh solutions support at least 1.8 Gbps in the backhaul, which is enough for 10–15 devices at once, as long as individual nodes aren’t overloaded. For stable performance, however, check if the mesh model offers a true "wireless backhaul" (not just a relay) and, if possible, Ethernet ports for a wired backbone connection—this significantly reduces interference. If you primarily need range and scalability (e.g., a large house or multiple floors), a mesh system with a wired backhaul is the most reliable choice. However, if your budget is limited and the number of devices isn’t extremely high, a tri-band router with 2.4 GHz and two separate 5 GHz bands will provide better throughput stability than a classic dual-band device. In either case, I recommend manually checking the channel plan (using DFS channels on 5 GHz) and keeping the firmware updated to ensure maximum stability.
