Guys, I've been seeing Wi-Fi 6 devices lately, but do I really need them? Does Wi-Fi 5 not meet my requirements? What are the differences, will I actually experience a performance loss? Even if my smartphone and laptop support Wi-Fi 6, my modem might not be compatible. What would be a budget-friendly upgrade plan? What would you guys do?

Well, look, I had to deal with this dilemma myself just last year when I upgraded my home router. I had a decent Wi-Fi 5, but with two laptops, three phones, and a gaming console, it was always maxed out. I spent time reading forums and benchmarks, but in the end, I went for it and tried a basic Wi-Fi 6 router (a TP-Link Archer AX21). The biggest difference was with my phone in the bedroom—before, 1080p streaming kept cutting out, but now it runs smoothly in 4K. That said, the improvement on my gaming laptop was minimal; the bottleneck was still the graphics card. What I did was buy the router without upgrading all my devices at once. Wi-Fi 6 is backward compatible, so my old gadgets kept working (though they didn’t get the speed boost). If money’s tight, start with a budget Wi-Fi 6 router and gradually upgrade your devices. But keep in mind: if you have a lot of devices connected or work with large files, the jump is worth it from the start.
