How do I choose the right home Wi‑Fi router: frequencies, bands, and settings?

I'd like to figure out what parameters to consider when choosing a router for an apartment. Which frequencies (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz) are better suited for different devices? How important is support for modern standards (Wi‑Fi 6, Wi‑Fi 6E), and what benefits do they provide in real-world usage? How do I properly set up channels to minimize interference from neighboring networks? And what basic security measures should I apply right after turning it on? Share your experience and recommendations—let's learn together.

Hello! When choosing a router for an apartment, first and foremost, focus on the supported frequencies: 2.4 GHz is great for "heavy" devices (smart speakers, IoT), has a larger coverage area, but is prone to interference from microwaves and Bluetooth; 5 GHz offers a "cleaner" spectrum, provides higher speeds and lower latency, making it ideal for PCs, consoles, and 4K streaming. If your home has modern laptops, smartphones, and tablets, look for a router with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) support—it delivers better performance with many simultaneous connections and more efficient resource management. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band, which is currently underutilized, but you’ll only benefit from it if your devices support 6E, so while it’s a plus, it’s not a must-have. Channel setup: enable automatic channel selection, then check the spectrum using apps like Wi-Fi Analyzer. In 2.4 GHz, it’s usually best to stick with channels 1, 6, or 11, while in 5 GHz, choose any with minimal congestion (often 36, 48, 149, or 157). Don’t forget to enable WPA3 (or at least WPA2-PSK), change the default SSID/password right after setup, disable WPS, and—if possible—restrict access by MAC addresses for IoT devices. These basic steps will significantly boost the security of your home network.

Thanks for the detailed post! In a typical apartment, 2.4 GHz offers better wall penetration, while 5 GHz provides faster speeds for nearby devices. Wi‑Fi 6/6E really shines when you have multiple Wi‑Fi 6-compatible gadgets, as they handle network congestion more efficiently. Just set your router to auto-select the least-used channel and enable WPA3 with a strong password. Do you already have a specific mesh system in mind?
