Subtitles can make video content more or less understandable depending on who you ask. Which do you think is more effective? 1) Default text-based subtitles 2) Transcript-style text directly on screen 3) No subtitles at all—just the original audio/video preferred? Why? In what scenarios would each option make the most sense?

It depends on the audience and the content itself. For most educational or instructional videos where precision matters—like coding tutorials or technical explanations—manual transcriptions (option 2) are the way to go. Why? Because auto-generated captions (option 1) still butcher terms like `uint256` or `ABI` about 30% of the time. Drop a cleaned-up transcript below the video, and suddenly non-native speakers, people in noisy environments, and even deaf viewers get the full picture without having to scrub through an error-filled SRT file. But for casual content—say, a DeFi protocol’s marketing explainer packed with memes and slang—default captions (option 1) are fine. The time saved outweighs the occasional “stak” instead of “stake.” Pro tip: YouTube’s auto-caps are 90% there now, so unless you’re in a strict compliance or usability-critical niche, don’t reinvent the wheel. Final scenario: social clips or live streams (3). If it’s a one-off reaction video or a brain-dump session where perfection isn’t the goal, skip captions entirely. The raw energy and authenticity always beat polished but delayed text.

Last week, while following a Japanese scientific article, I understood it faster than expected thanks to the default subtitles. The subtitles also allowed me to listen to the audio, and the combination of both was very helpful, especially for technical terms. The transcript was good too, but it was less practical since I couldn’t watch the video at the same time.

Should I use default captions or direct text in transcript form? Is there anyone who can compare which one improves comprehension better?
