When I review phones annually, I test for lighting changes (sunset, artificial lighting), moving shots (fast passersby on the metro vs. still portraits), and various surface textures (leaves, fabric, metal). The inconsistencies between devices become obvious this way.
Of course, I don’t completely ignore technical specs—sensor data, software optimizations (HDR, night mode), and processor performance (lag-free autofocus in good light) are all noted. I just don’t base my ratings solely on them; they’re used as references. The real focus should be answering the user’s question: *"What will my shots actually look like when I take them?"*
