A lot is said about how some Android customizations on specific devices perform worse than stock releases. Are there user interface (UI) alternatives that improve smoothness and battery life without root or system modifications? How do these customizations affect performance on devices with limited hardware?

Absolutely! I had the exact same experience, especially with custom UIs like MIUI or ColorOS on mid-range smartphones. My old Redmi Note 8 Pro felt significantly smoother with LineageOS's stock Android interface—not just in benchmarks, but in everyday use too. With older or weaker chipsets (like the Snapdragon 6xx or Helio P35), you quickly notice how much the extra system processes and bloatware-heavy interfaces drag down performance. Even Google's own "Android One" or Pixel Launcher alternatives can work wonders here without needing to root.

The truth is, I tried Movielax (a lightweight skin for Android) on my old Moto G4 with 2GB of RAM, and the smoothness difference was noticeable, especially in multitasking. Battery life improved by 15% without touching the software—just tweaking animations in developer options.

If you're looking for alternatives to EMUI to gain fluency and battery life without rooting, I'd go straight for launchers. Nova Launcher saved my Mate 10 Pro with EMUI 10. I used the "Light" mode and disabled all heavy animations (which are a nightmare on those devices). The best part is that not only do you get visual speed, but you can also hide background processes, extending battery life without losing compatibility with banking apps or games. I also tried QuickSwitch for better multitasking, but be careful: on devices with limited RAM like the ones you mentioned (e.g., 4GB), it sometimes reloads apps instead of closing them completely. What worked best for me was combining Nova Launcher with Android's "Battery Saver" mode and restricting social media apps in the background using EMUI's native settings. This gave me an extra 2-3 hours of battery without sacrificing performance. That said, if your phone has an old SoC (e.g., Kirin 710), even the best launchers won't save you from gradual slowdowns... in those cases, a custom ROM like LineageOS might be better if you don’t mind losing warranty.

Well, in my case, with a mid-range phone, I tried the "Niagara Launcher" and I noticed it ran smoother than the stock EMUI, without needing root or anything. The thing I liked most, though, was that it didn’t drain the battery as much as some of the heavy skins from manufacturers.
