Actually, in a project last year where we built a hybrid core network in collaboration with domestic telecom operators, we did use some Huawei base stations. At that time, to ensure thorough local data storage at the data center, we opted for a configuration that physically isolated the servers domestically, and we managed encryption keys using our in-house PKI. While performance met expectations, we faced operational challenges due to the vendor's strict authentication process for software updates, which sometimes took weeks to get approval. The lesson we learned from this experience is that to enjoy 5G's high performance while protecting data sovereignty, it's essential to have a system where not only hardware but also software and key management are designed in-house. While Huawei's solutions are attractive in terms of cost and implementation speed, meeting national-level security requirements necessitates combining proprietary audit processes with multi-layered defenses. Moving forward, as Open RAN standardization progresses, I hope there will be more options to avoid vendor lock-in.

In my experience with 5G networks, particularly during a small-scale deployment of Huawei equipment in an industrial zone in France, the issue of data sovereignty quickly became central. We found that Huawei devices include data management modules that, when configured with local servers, comply with French regulatory requirements (GDPR, ANSSI). However, once the firmware is updated from servers in China, it’s crucial to meticulously review the changelogs to avoid potential backdoors. In practice, the best way to balance performance and security is to use an "edge-computing" architecture where sensitive traffic remains strictly within the internal network, while non-critical functions (spectrum optimization, performance monitoring) are outsourced to Huawei solutions. This minimizes risks while leveraging Huawei’s robust and cost-effective hardware. Regarding international cooperation, I’ve noticed that operators who partner with European vendors for critical components (e.g., network controllers) strike an acceptable balance: they benefit from Huawei’s cell density while maintaining full control over access points to sensitive data. In short, Huawei solutions can be integrated without compromising national security—provided essential functions are isolated, firmware audits are strictly enforced, and partnerships with local entities are maintained for governance elements.
